Haleakalā Sunrise Reservation Guide: Booking, Fees, and What to Expect

If you plan to drive to the summit of Haleakalā on Maui to watch the sunrise, you need two things: a sunrise reservation and an entrance pass. The reservation costs US$1 per vehicle, is sold only online through Recreation.gov, and is required for any vehicle entering the park between 3:00 and 7:00 AM. Without it, you will be turned around at the entrance station until 7:00 AM. The main constraint is timing, not price. Slots open 60 days ahead at 7:00 AM Hawaii Standard Time, with a second batch opening 2 days ahead, and the early release often sells out within minutes. On top of the reservation, you pay the park entrance fee (US$30 for a private vehicle, valid 3 days), the park accepts no cash, and the summit is about 30°F colder than the coast on average. What to know first Sunrise reservations cost US$1 per vehicle and are required for entry from 3:00 to 7:00 AM; they are sold only on Recreation.gov, never at the entrance station, by phone, or on the day of your visit. Bookings open 60 days in advance at 7:00 AM HST, with a second release 2 days in advance at 7:00 AM HST; the 60-day batch can sell out in minutes. A reservation covers one vehicle for one date; the person named on it must be in the car with photo ID, and one customer can hold only one vehicle reservation every three days. The entrance fee is separate: US$30 per private vehicle for 3 days, covering the Summit and Kīpahulu Districts; annual, Tri-Park, and America the Beautiful passes are accepted with ID, and the park takes credit or debit cards only. Budget 2.5 hours from Kahului, 3 hours from Wailea, and 3.5 hours from Lahaina to the summit; fill up in Pukalani because there is no gas and no EV charging inside the park. Summit weather is about 30°F (17°C) cooler than the coast on average and can dip below freezing; bring warm layers, water, and sunscreen even in summer. Sunrise (entry 3:00–7:00 AM): reservation required; the busiest and coldest window, and the point is watching dawn from above the crater. Daytime (after 7:00 AM): no sunrise reservation needed; the same 3-day entrance pass works, and visitor centers, overlooks, and trails are easier to use. Sunset and night sky: no reservation required; the high elevation and dark skies make it a stargazing destination, but it is still cold and remote. If your goal is the crater views without the early drive, a daytime or sunset visit gives you the same pass with fewer constraints. Book the sunrise reservation How do you actually get the ticket? Create or log in to your Recreation.gov account before the release; you must be logged in to add a ticket to your cart. Tickets go on sale 60 days ahead and again 2 days ahead, both at 7:00 AM HST; book as early as you can because the first batch is limited and sells out fast. The fee is US$1 per vehicle, non-refundable, and one customer can hold only one vehicle reservation every three days. Keep the confirmation and bring photo ID that matches the reservation name; showing the confirmation on your phone is accepted. You can pre-pay the US$30 vehicle entrance fee on Recreation.gov as the "Haleakala Site Pass" to shorten the stop at the gate. No pass discounts the US$1 fee, and no refund is given for bad weather. Choose your entrance pass What will you pay at the gate? Standard Pass: US$30 per private vehicle, valid 3 days in both districts; US$25 per motorcycle; US$15 per person for walk-in or bicycle visitors aged 16 and older; youth 15 and under enter free on foot or by bike. Park Annual Pass: US$55, valid 12 months at Haleakalā, Hawaiʻi Volcanoes, and Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau for US citizens and residents. Hawai'i Tri-Park Annual Pass: US$55, covering the same three parks, available to US citizens and residents. America the Beautiful Pass: US$80 resident annual or US$250 non-resident annual; free or discounted passes exist for seniors, current military, veterans, people with permanent disabilities, and US 4th graders. The park is cashless: entrance stations and after-hours self-pay machines accept credit or debit cards only. Fee-free entrance days do not include the 3:00–7:00 AM window, and the US$1 sunrise reservation still applies. Plan the drive and timing When do you need to leave, and what does the road require? Drive times to the summit: 2.5 hours from Kahului, 3 hours from Wailea, and 3.5 hours from Lahaina via Routes 37, 377, and 378. Leave with a buffer: the road is dark, winding, and crosses endangered-species habitat; obey speed limits and watch for birds on the pavement. The park is open 24 hours, but vehicles without a sunrise reservation cannot enter between 3:00 and 7:00 AM, so arriving late means missing the sunrise. There is no gas station in the park and no EV charging station; the last gas before the summit is in Pukalani, and the park warns that even a fully charged EV may not make it. The summit area has no services: bring food and water, and remember that emergency medical help is at least one hour away. Summit viewpoints and weather Where should you watch from, and how do you pack for it? Four overlooks are available: Puʻu ʻUlaʻula (Red Hill) at 10,023 ft, Haleakalā Visitor Center at 9,740 ft, Kalahaku Overlook at 9,324 ft, and Leleiwi Overlook at 8,840 ft with a 10-minute walk from its parking lot. A reservation does not guarantee a parking spot at a particular overlook; lots close when full, and staff direct drivers to open spaces. Weather changes quickly: average summit temperatures range from below freezing to 50–65°F (10–18°C), with wind chill making it feel colder. Visitor centers may not open until after sunrise; check current hours if you need restrooms or ranger help. At 10,023 ft (3,055 m) of elevation, go slowly, drink water, and watch for altitude symptoms; help is far away. Rules that change the visit Which restrictions can break your plan? No vehicle enters the Summit District between 3:00 and 7:00 AM without a sunrise reservation; after 7:00 AM, the regular entrance pass is enough. The reservation holder must be present in the vehicle with ID that matches the booking, and one person can hold only one vehicle reservation every three days. There are no same-day, phone, or entrance-station sales, reservations are non-refundable, and no refund is given for weather. Stay on trails and roads, do not collect rocks or cultural items, and do not feed wildlife; speed limits protect endangered species. Overnight stays are allowed only in designated campgrounds with their own reservations; sleeping in a vehicle outside a campground is prohibited. Commercial sunrise tours must be run by operators with park authorization; if you join a tour, confirm that it covers your reservation and entrance fee. Common mistakes Showing up at the gate without a reservation between 3:00 and 7:00 AM — you will be turned around until 7:00 AM. Waiting until the day before to book; tickets are not sold then, and the 2-day batch is small. Treating the drive as a short trip; from Kahului it is 2.5 hours, and the road is slow in the dark. Wearing beach clothes; the summit is often below freezing even when the coast is hot. Driving up on low fuel or in an EV without charging; there is no gas or charger in the park. Expecting a refund or a guaranteed clear sky; sunrise is a weather lottery, and the reservation is non-refundable.
