Edinburgh Castle Ticket Guide: Online vs Walk-Up, Timed Entry, and Visitor Rules

Edinburgh Castle tickets sell out far in advance during the summer months, and once they are gone online there are no further tickets at the gate.

ByMomentBook Editorial·PublishedJun 29, 2026·UpdatedJun 30, 2026

Edinburgh Castle tickets sell out far in advance during the summer months, and once they are gone online there are no further tickets at the gate. This guide is for travelers who want to avoid showing up to a sold-out castle and need to choose the right ticket type, arrival time, and transport before booking.

The castle sits on a steep volcanic crag at the top of the Royal Mile. Reaching Crown Square means walking about 350 metres of cobbled uphill path, with a gradient that hits 15 degrees at the steepest point. Large bags are banned, there is no luggage storage, and ticket types differ in price, flexibility, and included access. The decision that matters most is whether to book a standard online ticket, a flexi ticket, or to use a pass.

What to know first

  • Tickets sell out frequently from April through September. Book online in advance for the best price and guaranteed entry. Walk-up tickets cost £2.50 more and are not available if the day is sold out online.
  • Large rucksacks and suitcases of 30 litres or more are not permitted inside the castle. The castle does not store luggage, prams, or personal items.
  • The castle opens at 9:30am year-round. From April through September, last entry is at 5pm and the castle closes at 6pm. From October through March, last entry is at 4pm and the castle closes at 5pm.
  • Allow at least two hours to see the main highlights: the Crown Jewels, the Great Hall, Mons Meg, St Margaret's Chapel, and the One o'Clock Gun.
  • The castle is closed on 25 and 26 December. On 1 January it opens at 11am. During the Edinburgh Military Tattoo on 8, 15, 22, 28, and 29 August, the castle closes at 5pm with last entry at 3:30pm.
  • Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Children aged 6 and under enter free.
  • The castle route is cobbled, steep, and exposed to Edinburgh weather. Wear sturdy shoes and bring a rain layer regardless of the forecast.

Choose the right ticket

  • Standard adult online: £23.50. Walk-up: £26.00.
  • Concession (65+, unemployed) online: £19.00. Walk-up: £21.00. No student discount is available.
  • Child aged 7–15 online: £14.00. Walk-up: £15.50.
  • Family with 1 adult and 2 children online: £48.50. Walk-up: £54.00.
  • Family with 2 adults and 2 children online: £67.50. Walk-up: £74.50.
  • Family with 2 adults and 3 children online: £80.00. Walk-up: £88.50.

Flexi ticket: lets you enter on any single day within a 7-day window starting from the date you choose at booking. No time slot is needed. Adult £38.00, concession £30.50, child £22.50. Flexi tickets are online-only.

Historic Scotland members and Explorer Pass holders enter free but must still book an online time slot to guarantee entry. Explorer Pass is valid for 14 consecutive days and covers Edinburgh Castle, Stirling Castle, Urquhart Castle, and many other Historic Scotland sites.

English Heritage, Cadw, and Manx members get half-price entry in their first year and free entry on renewal or life membership. Young Scot card holders pay £1. Serving British Armed Forces members with an MOD 90 card enter free.

Decide your arrival time and route

  • Morning time slots from 9:30am to 11am are the quietest and offer the shortest queue at the Crown Jewels.
  • The One o'Clock Gun fires daily at 1pm except Sundays, Good Friday, and Christmas Day. If you want to see it, time your Crown Square arrival for 12:45pm.
  • Avoid the 12:30pm and 1pm entry slots if you need the mobility vehicle, because the service pauses from 12:15pm to 1:15pm during the gun firing.
  • The castle is a 5- to 10-minute walk uphill from Waverley Station. From Haymarket Station, take a tram or bus to Princes Street and walk up the Mound.
  • From Edinburgh Airport, the Airlink 100 bus reaches Waverley Bridge in about 25 minutes. The tram takes about 30 minutes to Princes Street and runs every 7 minutes.
  • There is no public parking at the castle. The nearest car park is NCP Castle Terrace. A small number of accessible parking spaces on the esplanade can be booked by emailing ecparking@hes.scot.

Rules that change your visit

  • Suitcases and large rucksacks of 30L or more are banned. There is no bag drop, cloakroom, or luggage storage at the castle. Leave luggage at your hotel or use a city-centre luggage service before you arrive.
  • Security may carry out bag searches at the entrance.
  • Only assistance dogs are allowed inside the castle. No other dogs are permitted, including in vehicles.
  • Free carer tickets are available, limited to two carers per transaction. Book online to guarantee the carer spot.
  • The mobility vehicle to Crown Square can take up to three passengers plus one wheelchair user. Manual wheelchairs are available first-come, first-served.
  • The exit route from Crown Square includes 70 stone steps with a handrail. Staff can guide you back down an alternative path if stairs are not suitable.

Common mistakes

  • Arriving without an online ticket in summer and finding the day sold out. The castle confirms that once tickets are sold out online, no further tickets are available at the gate.
  • Bringing a large rucksack or suitcase and being turned away at security with no place to store it.
  • Underestimating the climb. The esplanade alone is a 110-metre uphill walk at a 5-degree gradient, and the full route to Crown Square is about 350 metres of steep, uneven cobbles.
  • Visiting on a Military Tattoo day without checking the earlier closing time, or arriving on 12 July 2026 when the castle closes at 4pm instead of the usual 6pm.
  • Assuming a student card gives a discount. The concession rate is only for visitors aged 65 and over or the unemployed. Students must pay the adult price.

Who should choose which option

  • Book a standard online timed ticket if your travel date is firm and you want the lowest price.
  • Choose a flexi ticket if your Edinburgh itinerary is still open and you want the freedom to visit on any day within a 7-day window.
  • Buy or renew a Historic Scotland membership or Explorer Pass if you plan to visit Edinburgh Castle plus at least one other major site such as Stirling Castle or Urquhart Castle.
  • Budget travellers with a Young Scot card should book the £1 entry online.
  • Families should compare the family bundle prices against individual tickets, particularly the 2-adult-2-child and 2-adult-3-child options.

What to check before you go

  • Bookmark the official ticket page at edinburghcastle.scot and check availability for your date before booking anything else.
  • Verify the opening hours for your specific date on the official site. Seasonal changes, the Military Tattoo, and one-off early closures can shift the schedule.
  • Check the Historic Environment Scotland closures page for any short-notice weather or maintenance shutdowns before leaving your accommodation.
  • Download the audio guide to your phone before you travel. The £4.00 guide is available in 13 languages, but on-site connectivity is unreliable.
  • Pack a rain jacket and sturdy walking shoes regardless of the season. The route is fully exposed and the cobbles are slippery when wet.
  • Arrive 10–15 minutes before your booked time slot. Latecomers may be accommodated at the discretion of staff, but there is no guaranteed late entry.
